As the next best thing if you need genuine 4WD abilities but don't want to go the whole hog with a 200 series LandCruiser is Toyota's range of Prados. Not afraid of a bash in the bush but not shy of the bitumen either, the Prado is available with a 4.0-litre petrol V6 producing 202kW and 381Nm, or an economical four-cylinder 3.0-litre turbo diesel producing the sort of numbers for which new-breed oilers are well known: 127kW and 410Nm. Spanning a wide range of models, most of which are eight-seaters, all include dual front airbags, dual-range 4WD and a limited slip differential.
